Full Bio of Srisailam and Mallikarjuna Temple
According to Hindu mythology, Srisailam was discovered before the Satya Yuga. The temple’s presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is worshiped as Mallikarjuna (signifying Shiva worshipped with jasmine flowers, Mallika), and Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Bhramaramba. The temple lore includes stories of divine weddings, spiritual disputes between Shiva and his sons Ganesha and Kartikeya, and several incarnations of Shiva and Parvati residing on the hill.
The oldest references date back to the Satavahana dynasty and later dynasties like the Ikshvakus, Pallavas, Chalukyas, and Vijayanagara empire have contributed to its architecture. The temple has legendary tales involving famous saints like Adi Shankaracharya and Ramanuja. The temple complex is known for unique rituals such as touching the Shiva Lingam during abhishekam (ritual bathing).
