Sripuram Golden Temple, Vellore
The Sripuram Golden Temple, also known as the Sri Lakshmi Narayani Golden Temple, is a modern architectural and spiritual marvel situated in Thirumalaikodi (Malaikodi) near Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Goddess Sri Lakshmi Narayani, the temple symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and spiritual harmony. Built under the guidance of Sri Sakthi Amma (Narayani Amma), the spiritual leader of Sri Narayani Peedam, it was consecrated on August 24, 2007.
The temple is constructed over 100 acres of land within the Sripuram Spiritual Park, surrounded by lush green hills, and entirely covered in 1,500 kilograms of pure gold, making it one of the largest gold-covered temples in the world. The gold plating was painstakingly done by artisans who manually converted gold bars into thin foils and mounted them onto copper plates in 9–10 layers, symbolizing divine purity. The temple’s architectural concept integrates sacred geometry; it is positioned along a star-shaped path (Sri Chakra), symbolizing spiritual progress toward enlightenment.
Temple Significance and Architecture
The design of Sripuram reflects elements from Vedic principles, Vaastu Shastra, and Hindu symbolism. Devotees walk a 1.8 km Sri Chakra-shaped pathway lined with inscriptions of spiritual teachings before reaching the sanctum, representing the journey of life leading to divine awareness. The temple’s Vimanam (tower) and Ardha Mandapam (main hall) feature breathtaking gold work with divine etchings inspired by scripture.
Sri Narayani Peedam envisioned the temple not only as a spiritual center but as a place promoting universal values like truth, love, righteousness, peace, and nonviolence. Unlike many traditional temples, Sripuram is open to people of all faiths and backgrounds, emphasizing spiritual unity and human values.
