Rameswaram
Rameswaram is a sacred town located on Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu, renowned as an important pilgrimage destination deeply connected to Hindu mythology and history. It is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites for Hindus, symbolizing the perfect completion of a spiritual journey. The town’s main spiritual attraction, the Ramanathaswamy Temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is revered as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, believed to be self-manifested. According to legend, Lord Rama, after defeating the demon king Ravana and rescuing his wife Sita, sought forgiveness at Rameswaram by worshiping Shiva. The temple houses a Shiva lingam built by Sita from sand, known as the Ramalingam, and a Jyotirlinga brought by Hanuman from the Himalayas, both worshipped in specific order. The temple also contains 22 sacred tanks (teerthams) believed to cleanse sins.
Historically, Rameswaram has seen contributions from the Pandyas, Sethupathis, Vijayanagara rulers, and others over centuries, with architectural improvements leading to the grandeur the temple exhibits today. The town was also strategically significant as a transit point toward Sri Lanka, with legends about the Ram Setu or Adam’s Bridge linking India and Sri Lanka.
