Dhanushkodi
Dhanushkodi is a historic and mysterious ghost town at the southeastern tip of Pamban Island, Tamil Nadu. Formerly a bustling port for trade and pilgrimage, Dhanushkodi was devastated in 1964 by a cyclone that destroyed the town, leaving it uninhabitable and abandoned. The town holds deep mythological significance as the legendary starting point of “Ram Setu” or Adam’s Bridge, believed to be constructed by Lord Rama’s vanara army to reach Lanka and rescue Sita according to the Ramayana. The name Dhanushkodi itself means “end of the bow,” symbolizing where Lord Rama is believed to have broken the bridge after his victory.
The ruins and the haunting landscape at Dhanushkodi, combined with the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean at Arichal Munai, make it a unique destination for both history enthusiasts and spiritual travelers.
